Replacing Powersports Batteries

Replacing Powersports Batteries

Powersports equipment has grown quickly in popularity over the past 10 years around the world including Canada. Motorcycles are a great way to travel in urban and rural areas, ATV’s and UTV’s are a fun way to get dirty and explore or as a workhorse around farms. There are plenty of waterways throughout the country for Personal Watercraft vehicles but the country is incredibly well suited for snowmobiles, often as a primary mode of transportation during long winter months.

All these vehicles are equipped with a battery of some form. Given the role that many of these vehicles play, the vibrations, the bumps and the work they have to do, having a spill-proof battery is key. With that in mind, the valve regulated lead acid (VRLA) battery is the preferred choice and for us, the Absorbed Glass Mat is the best fit over gel which tends to lose power faster, especially at cooler temperatures.
Some additional benefits of AGM batteries for powersports vehicles include:
  1. Maintenance free – water is retained within the battery casing so no need to top up with distilled water.
  2. Position – these batteries can be placed in virtually any position without loss of performance. Often this is necessary for some vehicles that have limited space.
  3. Emissions – there is a reduced need for ventilation with these batteries and as such, they have little to no fumes.

But not all AGM batteries are created equal either. Some additional considerations that can influence performance include the amp hour (AH) will offer a measurement of how many amps a battery will draw.

Check the voltage. The voltage typically relates to the strength of a battery. Most powersports batteries are 12 volts.

CCA or cold cranking amps can also be a factor, particularly for snowmobiles which run in cold temperatures.

Also make sure to check on the size compatibility with your current setup. There may not be a perfect fit for some replacements so adding a little padding around the sides may be necessary, but try to get as close as possible especially with the amount of movement they have to accommodate. The last thing you want is your battery bouncing around.
